At Lavender Psychology, we understand cognitive functioning as a diverse and meaningful aspect of human experience. Our goal is to provide a respectful and evidence-based assessment process that explores how individuals think, reason, and solve problems across different contexts. Whether you’re seeking greater clarity around learning, decision-making, or intellectual ability, we aim to deliver practical insights that support informed planning and personal growth.
Below is an outline of the steps involved in our cognitive assessments.
Standardised questionnaires are provided to the client and, where appropriate, to individuals such as parents, partners, or other key supports. These tools gather valuable insights into areas like attention, impulsivity, executive functioning, and social–emotional functioning. This helps identify specific areas of concern and patterns across contexts.
A structured conversation explores the individual’s developmental, cognitive, academic, and social history, along with current strengths and challenges. This step clarifies the referral question and ensures the assessment is tailored to the client’s goals and needs.
The WAIS-IV (for adults) or WISC-V (for adolescents) is administered to assess intellectual functioning, including areas such as verbal comprehension, working memory, and processing speed. These results provide context for understanding cognitive strengths and differences and areas for support.
A detailed, client-centered report is prepared, summarising assessment results, interpretations, and neuro-affirming recommendations for support, interventions, or accommodations tailored to the individual's unique needs.
A collaborative session where findings are explained in a clear and supportive manner, with opportunities for the individual (and family/support person, if appropriate) to ask questions, discuss implications, and plan next steps.

Cognitive assessments are designed to explore how an individual processes information, solves problems, and uses skills such as memory, attention, and reasoning. The results can support self-understanding, guide interventions, and inform decisions related to learning, work, or personal development.
A cognitive assessment typically focuses on intellectual functioning using tools like the WAIS or WISC. A learning (or psychoeducational) assessment includes cognitive testing plus academic achievement testing to explore how someone learns and applies knowledge in everyday tasks. If you’re unsure which one is right for you, feel free to contact us.
Learning assessments can be conducted for children as young as 6 years old. The WISC-V is typically used for children aged 6 to 16, while the WAIS-IV is used for individuals 16 and older. We provide a comprehensive and compassionate cognitive assessment process for individuals aged 12 and older.
The process includes an initial interview, standardised questionnaires, and formal testing (e.g., WAIS or WISC). These steps are designed to explore your thinking skills across areas like memory, attention, and problem-solving. A detailed report and feedback session are included to help you make sense of the results and apply them meaningfully.
A formal cognitive assessment provides objective insights into how an individual thinks, learns, and processes information. It can help identify cognitive strengths, clarify areas needing support, and guide decisions around education, employment, or therapeutic planning. The results can also assist with access to accommodations, services, or funding where appropriate.
Fees vary depending on the purpose and complexity of the assessment. At Lavender Psychology, we tailor each assessment to the individual. For a personalised quote, please visit our contact us page.
A referral is not required for a cognitive assessment at Lavender Psychology. Unfortunately, Medicare rebates are not available for standalone cognitive assessments. Please contact us if you have any questions or would like a personalised quote.
Our goal is to offer practical, strengths-based recommendations based on the results. If areas of difficulty are identified, your report will include clear, individualised suggestions for support, strategies, or referrals to other services as needed.
